本展は写真家フランク・ゴールケ（アメリカ人、b.1942）が、セント・へレンズ山（ 1980年5月18日 に大噴火 ） を1981年から約10年間にわたって撮影した、44枚 の白黒写真によるも。セント・へレンズ山 をテーマにしたプロジェクトとしては、モマにおいては1983年に次ぐ2度目の、より総括的なものとなる。

ゴールケはテキサス生まれ。1966年エール大学で、イギリス文学で修士号を取得。在学中より写真を始め、1971年にミネソタに移り、中西部を拠点に写真家活動を展開。現在はマサチューセッツに居住。セント・へレンズ山のプロジェクトの他に、アメリカのランドスケープをテーマとした”グレイン・エレベーターズ”(Grain Elevators in the American Landscape)などの仕事で知られる。

セント・へレンズ山はワシントン州に位置し、噴火後は国定火山公園(National Volcanic Monument)として整備され、現在は観光地としても人気がある。 噴火により亡くなった人の数は60人をこえ、林業などの地域産業も多大な損害を被った。吹き上がった噴煙は、偏西風にのり、北半球を覆うほどで、その年の日本は記録的な冷夏となった。
