ジェイコブ･ロウレンスJacob Lawrence （1917‐2000）
1917年にニュージャージーに生まれで、ニューヨーク、ハーレム育ちのアフリカン･アメリカン･アーティスト、ジェイコブ･ロウレンスの大回顧展がホイットニー美術館で始まった。彼は65年以上の芸術活動において、自由や社会正義のために奮闘したアフリカン･アメリカンの動向を熱烈に伝えてきた。彼は彼の絵画であるガッシュやテンペラの構成の中に、身の回りの出来事であった、日々の生活における人間の楽しみ、苦しみ、弱さ、強さを縮約した。大胆かつダイナミックな様式や、普通とは異なる構図、洗練された美しい配色には、20世紀のアメリカの現実であった戦争と貧困の問題、彼の怒りと感傷、平和への祈りを見ることができる。
