大学で建築を専攻したゴードン・マッタ-クラーク（１９４３−７８）がアーティストとしての活動を始めるきっかけは、２０代半ばにロバート・スミッソンらを含むアース・アートの活動に参加したことだといわれている。遺棄された建築物をチェーンソーで断裁するダイナミックなプロジェクトは、１９７０年代、ミニマリズムに続く次の世代に大きな影響を与えた。マッタ-クラークは、癌により３５歳の生涯を終える。短いながらも国際的に活躍した彼の全生涯を網羅した始めてのフルスケール回顧展である本展は、ホイットニー美術館のエリザベス・サスマンの企画によるもの。

マッタ-クラークが分断した建物は、その後取り壊され現存するものがない。残るのは、その過程を収めたビデオや写真。本展は、主にドキュメント資料で構成されるが、切断された建築の一部もマッタ-クラークの活動を具体的に示すものとして展示されている。できるだけ多くのオブジェクトを集めたと言うキュレーターのサスマンは、それらが非常にもろく、輸送移動に非常な注意を要したものだったことを強調。土ぼこりもそのままの断片達は変化を求めた７０年代の移行的な時代性をも暗示するようだ。

マッタ-クラークが生きた７０年代は、不況の時代でもあった。ニューヨークの町なかは都市計画半ばで打ち捨てられたビルディングであふる一方、彼が拠点としたSoHoは、活動的で変化に満ち実験的なアート・コミュニティーであったという。マッタ-クラークの建築物の切断・分断という行為は、一見破壊的でありながら、空間の発見、コミュニティー建築としてのビルや空間の再生・再利用といった創造的な行為であった。１９７１年にはアーティストによるアーティストのためのレストランFoodをプリンスとウースターストリートの角に設立。そのレストランは、３年後には閉鎖されるが、その間、マッタ-クラーク自身はもちろん、約６０人ものアーティスト達が調理から経営に至るまで様々な形で参加したといわれる。プレス会見では、美術館関係者が当時のダウンタウンを懐古的に語るのが印象的だった。日頃は辛口の批評が目立つニューヨーク・タイムズのマイケル・キメルマンも本展に関してはどこか郷愁を感じさせるコメントが目立った。（Yoko Yamazaki)
