ホイットニー美術館ビエンナーレ

ホイットニー美術館で２年ごとに企画されるビエンナーレはアートの街ニューヨークでも最大のイベントの一つである。アメリカ２０州とプエルトリコで活動する、合計２３カ国出身、１１３人のアーティストが参加した今回は１９８１年以来最大規模だ。美術館全体、彫刻の中庭、階段、エレベーター、ロビーギャラリーはもちろん、マディソンアベニューには光を使ったインスタレーション、また、パブリック∙アート∙ファンド（公共アート基金）の提供でセントラルパークにも５つの作品が展示されることになった。これに加えパフォーマンス、ビデオ、インターネット上の作品、ソーホーの個人所有アパートでのインスタレーションと本当に盛りだくさんだ。

参加アーティストの中にはキキ∙スミス(Kiki Smith)、ヴィヤ∙セルミンズ(Vija Celmins)、ケン∙ジェイコブス(Ken Jacobs)、マーク∙ナピエール(Mark Napier)、メレディス∙モンク(Meredith Monk)などの良く知られている作家も含まれる。

個人的に興味を持った作品は、カナダのアーティスト∙グループ、ジェネラル∙アイディアのエー∙エー∙ブロンソン（AA Bronson）。友人の死後数時間経過した姿を撮影した作品Felix Partz, June 5, 1994, 1994 and 99を発表した。ヴェラ∙ラターは近代建築のある風景を人間のXレイ写真のように寄妙に写し出す。エヴァン∙ホローウェイは枝を使って抽象的な彫刻を作るロサンジェルスのアーティスト。ロバート∙ラツラリーニは公衆電話を４０度位傾斜させた。中国出身のチュアン∙フアンのパフォーマンスは一度生で見てみたい。丸太の上に裸でうつぶせになって登場し、食べ物を体中に振り掛け後に５，６匹の犬を登場させなめさせるというパフォーマンスはチェルシーのギャラリーでも紹介された。

何はともあれ、ニューヨークを今訪れるアートファン、ニューヨーク在住の方々には必見の展覧会である。尚、パフォーマンス、ビデオ上映、アーティストの講演会などに関しては美術館のホームページで確認できる。
