米国の人種問題をユニークな観点から考察したことでこの冬評判になった展覧会、ONLY
SKIN DEEP「肌だけで」。タイトルは、「肌の色だけではなくて（人の中身が重要）」More
than skin deepという表現の反対語と言えるだろう。キューレーターのCoco
FusocoとBrian
Wallisは「（この展覧会の）焦点は、写真がどうやって私達に人種を見せてきたかである。」と説明している。
５部門に分かれた展示の解説は下記の通りである。
1)
Looking Up / Looking Down「見上げて・見下げて」科学的人種差別と呼ばれる、肉体的な違いを証拠に人種間の違いを強調する動き。２) All
For One / One for All「皆の為に・一つの為に」理想的なアメリカの画像化と、人類学的な記録として使用された人種、白人でないアメリカ人の比較。３） Humanized
/ Fetishized「人間らしく・物化」被写体の個性に重点を置いた作品と、被写体をモノ化した作品。４） Assimilate
/ Impersonate「同化・装い」他の人種の真似をした格好や行動の流行と、２０世紀初めMelting
pot（人種の坩堝）迷信が政府の「同化政策」にまで及んだ時世。５） Progress
/ Regress「進歩・逆行」Social
Darwinism（社会的ダーウィン主義）特定の人種が進歩を象徴するのに対し、他の人種は時代を遡り工業化以前を象徴するとした傾向。
記録写真とアート作品を織り交ぜて、Only
Skin Deepはアメリカに存在してきた社会風潮の両極にある差別を明確に提示した。同タイトルで出版された展覧会カタログは一見の価値ありだろう。
